Public comment rules revision under new state law
State law changes are forcing Washington County to update how residents can raise topics during public comment at commission meetings. The new Commission also needs to formally adopt its Rules of Procedures. These rules directly shape residents' access to speak at county meetings.
White Flag and Red Flag procedural operations
The committee will discuss whether the county should adopt or support policies for White Flag and Red Flag operations, which guide coordinated responses during crisis situations. Any policy direction could shape how police, EMS and social services respond together.
Sheriff's Office Staffing and Budget Requests
The Sheriff's Office wants to accept a $12,500 state TCI grant to buy law enforcement supplies for 2026-2027. It's new state money that boosts department equipment without touching local tax dollars.
Surplus property disposition
A long list of Sheriff's Office property — old forfeited vehicles, laptops, tablets, printers and worn-out laundry equipment — could be declared surplus and sold or scrapped. Clearing it out makes room and possibly recovers some value.
Proposed Environmental Court for Washington County
The county attorney is laying out what it would take to start an Environmental Court, which would handle cases like illegal dumping and property code violations. It could mean faster cleanup of problem sites across the county.
Opioid Abatement Funds
Commissioner Jodi Jones will update the committee on how opioid settlement money is being used locally. Recovery Court programs have previously received these funds.
Task Force Appointments
The Commission considered appointments of commissioners and local representatives to both the Communications Task Force and the Water Task Force.
Hurricane Helene Flood Recovery Recognition
The county honored local emergency services personnel, sheriff's deputies, and specialized K-9 units for their persistence and success in recovering the final missing person from the September 2024 Hurricane Helene floods.
Public Records Act Compliance and Workload
The county attorney presented an annual review of public records requests, noting that request volumes have more than doubled over the past three years, driven partly by automated tools and high demand for law enforcement body camera footage. Staffing and budget adjustments may be necessary to handle future growth.
