5 issues in taxes budget
Airport finances and fuel revenue
Fuel revenue topped $50,000 for a fifth straight month, but the airport shows a fiscal-year net loss of $12,052.67. Fuel prices rose $0.56 for av gas and $0.65 for jet fuel since the last meeting.
FY 2026-27 city budget and tax rate
The board approved the annual budget on first reading. Sales tax is running 2-3% ahead of budget, which helps keep pressure off the property tax rate.
Charter amendment ratified
The board ratified the state private act amending Springfield's charter — the final step in the process. Alderman Hubbard noted it involved filling positions with qualified people.
Expanded public comment rules
State law changed, so speakers at board meetings can now raise anything within the city's jurisdiction — not just items on that night's agenda. Planning Commission and other bodies still limit comments to their agendas.
Workers' compensation pay supplement
Injured city workers can now use their benefit leave to make up the third of pay they lose after 14 days on workers' comp — a change city staff say keeps employees from financial hardship.
